Who was Cheyassin Secka, and why does his name still appear in discussions about Gambian politics and law?
Pap Cheyassin Ousman Secka was a Gambian lawyer, politician and former Attorney General. He also served as Minister of Justice. His career crossed several important periods in the country’s political history, from the government of Sir Dawda Jawara to the administration of Yahya Jammeh.
His story was not a simple political career. It included legal work, opposition politics, imprisonment and a later return to public office.
Cheyassin Secka Early Life and Education
Cheyassin Secka was born in June 1942 in what was then the Gambia Colony and Protectorate. He was the son of Ousman Secka and Neneh Jobarteh.
He attended the Methodist Boys’ High School in Bathurst, now known as Banjul. In 1962, he qualified as a teacher and worked in The Gambia before continuing his education abroad.
In 1964, Secka travelled to the United States to study. He later attended American University in Washington, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1968 and a Master of Arts degree in 1969.
He also received a fellowship at Columbia University in 1970 and 1971. In 1973, he was called to the English Bar and returned to The Gambia to practise law.
Cheyassin Secka and Gambian Politics
Secka became active in Gambian politics during the First Republic under President Dawda Jawara.
In 1975, he helped establish the National Liberation Party. The party challenged the political establishment at the time. Secka later contested parliamentary elections, although he did not win his seats. Historical records show that the National Liberation Party eventually became defunct.
His political activity made him a notable figure during a period when opposition politics in The Gambia was still developing.
The 1981 Coup Attempt and Imprisonment
One of the most controversial chapters in Cheyassin Secka’s life came after the attempted takeover of power in 1981 led by Kukoi Samba Sanyang.
Secka was sentenced to life imprisonment over his alleged involvement in the attempted coup. He spent nearly 12 years in prison before receiving an amnesty.
The period remains an important part of his biography because it changed the course of his legal and political career.
A 2026 article by Foroyaa also revisited Secka’s political history. The article described him as a prominent Gambian lawyer who had chosen to enter politics and challenge the existing system.
Return to Public Life
After his release from prison, Secka returned to legal and public life.
Around 2000, he became Attorney General of The Gambia under President Yahya Jammeh. Official legal records also identify him in connection with legal proceedings from this period.
His time as Attorney General was relatively short. He served from March 2000 until January 2001.
His period in office also coincided with one of the most difficult moments in modern Gambian history, following the April 2000 student demonstrations and the government response to them.
Cheyassin Secka’s Later Years
After leaving government, Secka continued working as a private lawyer.
He remained known within The Gambia for his legal career and earlier involvement in politics. His professional life covered several decades and included work as a barrister, political activity and senior government service.
Pap Cheyassin Secka died on 29 March 2012 in The Gambia at the age of 69. Contemporary reporting confirmed his death and described him as a prominent Gambian lawyer, former Attorney General and former Minister of Justice. He was buried at Old Jeshwang Cemetery on 30 March 2012.
